Xypex is a non-toxic, chemical treatment for the waterproofing and protection of concrete. Xypex's primary and most distinguishing performance feature is its unique ability to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation deep within the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete - a crystalline structure that permanently seals the concrete against the penetration of water and other liquids from any direction.
Xypex crystalline products are dry powder compounds composed of portland cement, silica sand and many active, proprietary chemicals.

Copes Creek Dam, Falls Creek, Victoria

Copes Creek Dam in the Victorian Alpine High Plains has received rehabilitation work to prolong the life of the structure. Originally constructed in the late 1940's, Copes Creek Dam is situated above Falls Creek in the Alpine area of Victoria. It serves as part of the regulating pondage of the AGL southern hydro scheme.

Subjected to extreme seasonal conditions, the dam experiences freeze thaw deterioration of the concrete due to the extensive snow coverage and cold temperatures.

Xypex was specified and applied to rehabilitate the structure and to provide protection to ensure long term durability of the important asset. Preparation included aggressive removal of all loose materials until a solid substrate was achieved thereby optimising the surface to receive the repair mortar Xypex MegaMix II.

Prior to applying the repair mortar, Xypex Concentrate was applied to promote crystalline growth at depth, thereby preventing moisture absorption and continuation of the freeze thaw effect.

The dam is a conventionally reinforced structure and the remedial work was applied to a total area of 300m2. All work was carried out by Southern Hydro personnel in conjunction with Xypex technical staff.
