ABOUT US
XYPEX technology was developed during the late 1960s by Stewart Mainwaring, who founded the XYPEX Chemical Corporation, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and released XYPEX onto the market early in 1970.
In 1991, Concrete Waterproofing Manufacturing Pty. Ltd., trading as XYPEX Australia, was established to manufacture the unique range of XYPEX concrete waterproofing, protection and repair products.
Negotiating with XYPEX Chemical Corporation, XYPEX Australia's Managing Director and principal shareholder Robert K. Godson negotiated an exclusive, long-term licence for the manufacture, distribution and sales of XYPEX throughout Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia.
Rob Godson's interest in XYPEX arose from his exposure to the technology through the petroleum industry, where he was the principal of Teraco Petroleum, a large rural petroleum distributor.
XYPEX was then making early inroads as remedial technology in the water treatment, supply and storage industries. All XYPEX products were then fully imported from Canada.
After selling his interest in Teraco, Rob formed XYPEX Australia and established a manufacturing facility in his home city of Albury, N.S.W.
Straddling the Murray River at the NSW and Victorian border, Albury-Wodonga offered then and continues to provide a strategically placed, decentralised manufacturing community with productive development managed and supported by the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation.
Manufacturing is the largest employer in the region, accounting for approximately 26% of the workforce. It is also significantly export oriented, with a very high level of public and private investment in infrastructure, including a rail and road container terminal, as well as customs and quarantine services. The Albury-Wodonga region is also the site of Australia's only inland port.
XYPEX Australia's manufacturing facility is a highly mechanised, 'best available technology' blending and packaging plant, capable of producing in excess of 5 tonnes of product per hour. Raw materials are sourced locally and from throughout Australia and the plant generally operates with sufficient reserves to meet sixty days' manufacturing requirement at peak present demand.
XYPEX Australia has developed Quality Systems in accordance with Australian-New Zealand Standard AS/NZS ISO 9002 1994. These systems are applied to all aspects of manufacturing, marketing and distribution, underpinning XYPEX Australia's commitment to providing all of its customers with a world standard product, suited to its intended usage, on request and at a competitive price.
XYPEX Australia's marketing philosophy is to develop and supports sales through its offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong and a distributor network covering the rest of Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia.
With the direct aid of XYPEX Australia's manufacturing office, they:
- Develop and inform the marketplace of the application of coatings and admixtures, and to supervise the quality control of concrete.
- Increase the product's market penetration by actively promoting among specifiers, eg. Architects and engineers.
- Increase the product's market penetration by development of a trade sales market to concrete and construction companies.
- Promote and advertise XYPEX products through trade shows, and gain extensive knowledge of XYPEX products, their benefits and unique features.
- All XYPEX staff and distributors are required to spend time at the manufacturing facility in Albury to gain knowledge in practical work and theory of the products prior to marketing in their own areas.
The manufacturing office provides full technical backup on sales and promotions via personnel visits, telephone and facsimile communication and technical manuals. Within the building industry in Australia and New Zealand, all remedial and new construction markets have been targeted and XYPEX products are being used in all forms of civil and commercial construction.
In Asia, we quietly continue with our objective of establishing our 'credentials' with an increasing number of larger Asian construction companies and with the Public Works departments of our various near-neighbor states. As a result of these endeavors, our technology is being applied in some of the largest, technical (and prestigious) projects now under way.
At XYPEX Australia, we choose not to walk the common path but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
XYPEX is proven technology. When applied, XYPEX technology will profoundly impact on the quality of construction concrete. It will positively impact on many of the durability parameters of good concrete. Used in conjunction with sound design, placement, finishing and curing practices, XYPEX can double or treble the life of concrete and, in reasonable circumstances, completely eliminate future maintenance problems arising out of phenomena such as "concrete cancer".
All concrete is now exposed to the impact of new conditions, like the changes wrought by the El Nino effect or the build up in our everyday environment of dissolved gasses, such as nitrous oxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide (NOx, SOx and CO2.) causing carbonation.
Once installed in concrete, XYPEX technology will reduce or completely eliminate many of these effects, by significantly reducing the volume of permeable voids; by perpetually healing fine cracks and by denying water as a transport medium within the concrete matrix.
XYPEX technology has been applied in many diverse projects, ranging from Stadium Australia at the 2000 Olympics site in Sydney, to Maybank's record-setting twin-tower headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; from the Bank of China's massive headquarters in Beijing, to the shotcrete re-lining of vast conduit sections of the Panama Canal; from protecting the steel with just 35mm of cover in some of the public transport wharf facilities around Sydney harbor, to the slab and retaining wall in the Lavery's basement den in Warrandyte, Victoria.
XYPEX CHEMICAL CORPORATION AND XYPEX AUSTRALIA
XYPEX Chemical Corporation (XYPEX Canada) is a worldwide organisation with 30 years experience in the concrete waterproofing and repair industry. XYPEX is distributed in 66 countries and manufactured in 6 countries under licence.
XYPEX Australia was appointed as distributors/manufacturers for XYPEX in 1991 and at that time had a full time staff of just one. Significant market penetration, excellent products and management has seen that figure expand to 26 employees in 12 years.
During this period XYPEX Australia has penetrated the market to become a major player and has created an extensive network of distributors in every state , seven distributor areas in Australia, and has expanded into the export market with four distributors in SE Asia and New Zealand.
A close working relationship with XYPEX Canada has been established and maintained. Numerous visits by key personnel from both organisations have and continue to occur. XYPEX Australia offers trade and technical support and can and does call upon the technical expertise and experience of XYPEX Canada. There are few if any situations or circumstances which XYPEX Canada do not have experience in by way of the extensive worldwide resources that they have fostered and continue to develop. They have collated a vast quantity of project references, project experience and industry experience all of which is readily available.
KUNISEAL BENTONITE CLAY WATERSTOP
A decision was made by XYPEX Australia in 1996 that there was a need to look closely at the design and treatment of construction joints in XYPEX treated concrete. We had found that the effectiveness of the XYPEX treatment and different construction methods required a universal jointing material.
After a world-wide search, Kuniseal, a bentonite clay based waterstop manufactured by Kunimine Industries, was sourced in Japan which suited our stringent criteria. Kunimine Industries began mining bentonite products in 1949, and initiated production of bentonite based products in the same year. In the half century since, Kunimine Industries has developed a range of superior products in rapid succession for a wide range of industrial fields.
Today, Kunimine Industries play a significant role in industries ranging from civil engineering, construction and oil fields to geothermal resources development, metal processing, waste water and radioactive waste disposal. At the same time, Kunimine Industries provide products that are used in our day to day lives through their activities as a supplier to food, pharmaceutics, cosmetics and pet products.
XYPEX Australia has now been appointed Kunimine Industries sole agents of Kuniseal Products for Australia and New Zealand and in the space of eighteen months have become the largest suppliers of Kuniseal in the Asian region. Xypex Company Profile (4 page) (PDF 2705 K)
